Drowning

Drowning is a leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 years and teens. Even small amounts of water can pose a risk of drowning for toddlers. To reduce the risk:

  • Keep hot tubs locked.
  • Fence in-ground pools and empty small infant pools after every single use.
  • Use toilet locks to keep the lid down and secure.
  • Never leave an infant or young child alone in the tub even for a minute.
  • Assign one parent to watch each child who is swimming.
  • Use life jackets yourself and enforce children wearing theirs whenever you are on a river or the ocean.
  • Don’t let teens hot tub or swim alone.
  • Warn teens of the danger of drinking alcohol while swimming or doing water recreation activities.
